At Burwood Public School, we prioritise the safety of our students and families on the roads surrounding our school. With busy streets like Burwood Road and Conder Street nearby, it’s crucial that all members of our community understand and follow road safety rules. Together, we can create a safe environment for everyone.
Drop off and Pick Up
Students who walk to and from school are encouraged to use the supervised pedestrian crossing on Conder Street during school hours. It’s important to always wait for the crossing supervisor’s signal before stepping onto the road. Even when using traffic lights on Burwood Road, students should practice the "Stop, Look, Listen, and Think" method to ensure their safety. Additionally, students should walk on the footpaths along Burwood Road and Conder Street, keeping to the left and staying away from the kerb.
Parents and carers are encouraged to consider active travel options, such as walking, cycling, or using public transport, to reduce the number of cars around the school and promote a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. For those who must drive, please use the designated drop-off and pick-up zones along Stanley Street and Hornsey Street. To ensure smooth traffic flow and student safety, avoid stopping or parking in the library carpark, bus zones, no-stopping areas, or driveways near the school. Minimising car use and keeping clear of busy areas helps reduce congestion, lowers risks for pedestrians, and creates a safer environment for everyone.
Safe and Active Travel
At Burwood Public School, road safety education is a key part of our curriculum. Students participate in engaging activities that teach them how to navigate the busy streets around our school. They learn about using supervised crossings and traffic lights correctly, the importance of helmets and seatbelts, and recognising hazards on busy roads like Burwood Road. These lessons help students build lifelong road safety habits.
We encourage all members of the Burwood Public School community to work together to create a safe and inclusive environment. Parents can model safe behaviours by following road rules, such as using pedestrian crossings and avoiding unsafe parking. Discussing road safety with children and participating in school initiatives like Walk Safely to School Day reinforces these important habits. Together, we can ensure the safety of our students on Burwood’s busy streets.
