Catching public transport
Public transport is a great way to safely get to and from school.
Burwood Public School is in close proximity to Burwood train station and to bus routes which stop directly in front of the school premises on Conder Street.
In addition to the bus routes which stop directly in front of the school, we are also in easy walking distance from the many bus routes which travel through the main thoroughfare of our suburb, Burwood Road.

Getting to and from school safely
As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.
Keep our school community safe by:
- driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
- being a good role model
- never calling your child from across the road
- using the safest place to cross the road.
For parents and carers of younger children
Discuss with your child how to be safe when:
- walking
- in the car
- waiting for, travelling on, and getting off the bus
- riding bikes, scooters and skateboards.
Also talk about and practise:
- safe travel routes
- plans for when unexpected things happen
- what to do in wet weather.
Road Safety
At Burwood Public School, we prioritise the safety of our students and families on the roads surrounding our school.
With busy streets like Burwood Road and Conder Street nearby, it’s crucial that all members of our community understand and follow road safety rules. Together, we can create a safe environment for everyone.
Drop off and Pick Up
Students who walk to and from school are encouraged to use the supervised pedestrian crossing on Conder Street during school hours. It’s important to always wait for the crossing supervisor’s signal before stepping onto the road.
Even when using traffic lights on Burwood Road, students should practice the "Stop, Look, Listen, and Think" method to ensure their safety.
Additionally, students should walk on the footpaths along Burwood Road and Conder Street, keeping to the left and staying away from the kerb.
Parents and carers are encouraged to consider active travel options, such as walking, cycling, or using public transport, to reduce the number of cars around the school and promote a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.
For those who must drive, please use the designated drop-off and pick-up zones along Stanley Street and Hornsey Street. To ensure smooth traffic flow and student safety, avoid stopping or parking in the library carpark, bus zones, no-stopping areas, or driveways near the school.
Minimising car use and keeping clear of busy areas helps reduce congestion, lowers risks for pedestrians, and creates a safer environment for everyone.
Bicycle and Scooter Safety
Students are encouraged to ride their bikes and scooters to school, but must always wear an approved helmet when riding.
When on school grounds, bikes and scooters are not to be ridden, but parked in the bike stands near the school's entrance on Hornsey Street.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. We can all help by acting in a safe, responsible and caring manner.
Subsidised school travel
Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.
- The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
- The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
Driving and parking
The start and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools.
When driving and parking near our school, please:
- ensure you park safely in school zones
- follow speed signs
- do not make U-turns or 3-point turns outside the school.
YMCA Out Of School Hours care
