What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

Our subjects

Burwood Public School offers classes in all six key learning areas.

Key learning areas are set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) which is responsible for the curriculum, Kindergarten to Year 12, for all NSW schools.

For the primary years, NESA develops syllabuses for all subjects in 6 key learning areas:

  • creative arts
  • English
  • human society and its environment (HSIE)
  • mathematics
  • personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE)
  • science and technology.

Some primary schools may also offer languages.

NSW schools also offer special religious education and special education in ethics via approved providers, where available.

Like all NSW schools, we have developed teaching and learning programs to suit our local context and the needs of our students.

High potential and gifted education

At our school, every learner’s potential is our priority. We work to give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our school is a place of diversity and opportunity, where every learner belongs. High potential and gifted education is delivered in-class, across the whole school and department wide. We believe in challenging our students to think, create, lead and grow every day.
